Čepkelių raiste

We visited Čepkeliai in the summer of 2019, and I remember well that I learnt from my friends how amazing the scenery is there, especially the sounds, which you have to arrive as early as possible in the morning to hear.
So we booked a guide, the guide coordinated the details with the park, and after packing up our stuff, we were there early in the morning, maybe at 6:00 am (If possible, go before 5:00 am or so) Spring is the best time to hear the abundance of birds and animals. We were really surprised and didn’t believe that we could see such nature here in Lithuania.

Merkine Castle Mound

The Merkinė Mound is about 20 metres high. Once you climb it, you have a magnificent view of the surrounding forests, the confluence of the Merkís and Nemunas rivers and the island there, as well as the bridge over the Nemunas.
Merkine Lookout Tower
- Seinų g., Merkinė, Varėnos r.
The viewing platforms are located at heights of 15 and 25 m and are irregularly shaped, resembling stylised pine trees. The playgrounds are accessed by a staircase that winds between the pillars, like a forest path. This “path” leads the visitor upwards and winds through the trees, opening up new views of the forest, before eventually leading to the viewing platforms, which offer a magnificent view of the Dzūkija National Park.
Liškiava Church

The dominant and decorative feature of the entire architectural ensemble of Liškiava is the Church of St. Trinity Church, a magnificent late Baroque building. The church has preserved monuments from 1899. an organ made in Warsaw by the Polish craftsman Szymanski. They were built in honour of Bishop A. Baranauskas’ visitation. This organ was installed in 1899. K. Čiurlionis (1851-1914), father of the famous artist M. K. Čiurlionis.
Liškiava Castle Mound

The Liškiava hillfort, also known as the Witch’s Wall, Castle Hill, is located on the left bank of the Nemunas River, southwest of the town, behind the Bažnyčia (Alkakalnio) Hill. It is a long, massive hill, 100×50 m in size, with southern and south-eastern slopes 30 m high, descending to the Nemunas River with a spectacular view of the countryside.
Family restaurant - Šilo kopa

We unexpectedly stumbled upon Šilo Dune in Merkinė. We were planning to go to a petrol station for a sandwich, but when we saw a hut, we stopped.
Words fail.
We were sitting on the verandah, a table for four, elbows together. Right at the entrance, we were greeting other guests, but how cosy and warm it was. Just like Grandma’s. The waitress jumps around with a smile. Tells the most interesting stories about ŠMALC. Trying to prove that it’s tasty, because it sounded like a big cutlet to me. And when I heard that it was crackling with fat, I immediately frowned. FU!
Emotion, environment, mood, empathy, originality, otherness and at the same time simplicity. Wow!
A place is worth 10 points or more. It’s worth coming back again and again. And it’s not a restaurant where €120 is as good as anywhere… We paid 50 Euros and four adults ate.
It’s a small, cosy hut, tastefully decorated. Warm staff, a menu that is different every day. And the dishes are spectacular. Food worth applauding!
And I’m holding the SCHMALTZ. So good!
I liked all the dishes we ate because we all shared. It was interesting to taste as much as possible 🙂

We visited, it was really nice and tasty. If you like game dishes, we recommend the smoked ribs. You can also find Dzūkija potato pasties in the restaurant!
